Sleepless in Muscat, RIP

I received the sad news late this evening of the passing of Ali Mehdi, known to most of you as Sleepless in Muscat. Ali was without a doubt, Oman's most prolific blogger. He was also an aspiring poet who self-published two books of poetry, and a frequent columnist in The Week and online on the Times of Oman website. He posted frequently on Oman Forum as well. As a blogger, he contributed to a dazzling number of blogs in addition to his own many blogs. He was also the founder of the Oman Community Blog.

Ali's last post on his blog was on May 3rd. It was a poem called Passion's Death.. He fell ill shortly after and was admitted to hospital into Intensive Care where he remained till his passing earlier today. He was 29.

Deepest condolences to his family; our prayers are with them in this difficult time.

The men's 3azza is in Masjid Al Imam Al Mahdi in Jibroo. It's the one in front of Oman Flour Mills. Tomorrow is the last day so if you want to go you should go before Dhuhr prayers tomorrow.

Oh my, Ina Lillaah Wa Ina Elaihi Raji3oon. May God make it go easy on the family and keep them and us away from sudden deaths. Ameen.

I feel very sad for his family
It is very difficult to come to term when someone so young dies so suddenly.

I really liked his blog. Reading and writing in blogs and forums make you very close to people who we even do not know their names and it is heartbreaking to hear that they left us and we will no longer their company in cyberspace.

I wish him the mercy of god and his family the strength to cope.

Wow, Allah yir7amo, inna lillah wa inna ilayhi raji3oon. I heard about this but I didn't think it was true.

Can anyone elaborate on the cause of death? He surely had quite deep and serious issues, as if he was always depressed. The kind associated with chronic illness, but i didn't expect this.

May Allah be with him and his family and may Allah bless him with al firdos.

How very, very sad.

He will certainly be remembered very fondly by me and I am sure by most of the UAE blogging community.

I knew Ali best for his postings on Secret Arabian Journal, and short conversations through msn.

Like most well known writers worldwide, he was one of the saddest, happiest people I ever met. He made his mark on the world through his beautiful writings and he will be missed.

Allah yer7amak. May he rest in peace.

May Allah bless you with Paradise, Ameen. For all the hardships you went through, I pray that peace has finally come to you. You have left such a mark and remembered so fondly by family, friends and bloggers--just how you wanted it to be.

I read Mohana's editorial in The Week today and got to know about Ali. May God grant him eternal peace. He gave a voice to the thoughts of so many. His angst and frustration at times mirrored the feelings of so many in Muscat. May God grant his family and loved ones the strength to bear this loss.
Sleepless in Muscat, you will be missed so much! Rest in Peace.

On Second Thought
Mohana Prabhakar, July 02, 2008

You get so caught up in all your own tiny, insignificant problems that sometimes you forget to appreciate life - just the simple act of living. Then all it takes is news, like the kind I got last week, to forget about your own niggling worries and sit back and think about life and what we have, rather than what we don’t.

I don’t know how many of you out there knew or had heard of Ali Mehdi. For those who didn’t know him, Ali was a poet, with two books already published, and he was working on his third one. For a while, he wrote columns for us at TheWeek talking about issues that he felt needed to be addressed. Some of you may have known him as Sleepless in Muscat, whose blog contained some of the most poignant reminders about life and what
it brings (or does not bring) to each one of us.

Ali died last week – he was just 29 years old. He had been very unwell for a while now and the thing is even when I used to read his blog (and he did write about his life being constantly interrupted with visits to hospitals), I never imagined that it was serious enough to end the story so soon.

The first time I met him was in January 2006 when he came to see me. A young, skinny guy with a rather serious face, Ali wanted to write columns for TheWeek because he believed it would reach a lot of people that his words needed to get to. I hadn’t known him till then, hadn’t read his poetry and neither had I seen his blog.
All I saw was an individual whose command over English was good, his ideas were different and he wanted to change some things in the world around him. I didn’t discover for a while longer that Ali was Sleepless in Muscat. Some of the stuff he used to write made you want to reach out and say, don’t worry, things will sort themselves out.

Unfortunately, it didn’t and I will always regret the fact that I didn’t get to know him better. Ali was someone who had a lot to give the world and did the best he could in the short time that he had. Not many of us may be able to say that.
