OmanTel announces new ADSL packages

So the pricing for the new ADSL packages are now announced and can be checked on OmanTel's official website. [Link]

As Muscati pointed out in my previous post, the 8 Mbps turned out to be close to 100 OR. 99 OR actually. It's crazy, even after considering the unlimited free downloads you get with that package. Nobody on his right mind will pay 99 OR on an Internet connection for personal usage.

The other four packages starting from 512 Kbps, 1 Mbps, 4 Mbps are reasonably priced I guess. You can check the packages in details [here].

And yeah.. according to the press release, your 384 Kb/s ADSL connection should automatically upgrade to 512 Kb/s with no charges.

So, what do you think of the pricing ?

Here is a small example. At night (Off-peak for internet YAY!), I can watch youtube without interruption. During morning and peak hours, It stops every 2 sec for 5-10sec everytime. Thats with the "Upgraded" 512kbps. Now keep in mind people still didn't move to the new packages which will add more load to the network. What I am trying to say is, these guys can't provide a decent 512kbps throughput, imagine how your 1,2,4 or 8mbps will be gimped. Btw, Congratulations to Omantel for introducing Peak and Off-Peak times for the internet. First time I heard about it happening to the internet. Oh and they are using a "Fair usage Policy". Such a policy with a monopolic company and your high speed connection is gimped even further. besides, don't think the 512kbps is an upgrade, because at 12Ro per month, it isn't. These guys don't even bother about service quality so why bother paying high for the faster connections when you will for sure get far less than advertised. Oh and there is a pig chance you will have to add the price of a new modem if your's doesn't support ADSL+2 for the higher speeds.

all that I would say is that I enjoyed the 40 Rials limit despite having more downloads and now I fear that my bill would be a lot higher per month!!!

The limit still exists on the 512kbps package.

I especially love how Omantel advertises such "great" deals, in every place imaginable (including on our monthly statement), YET, we can't even get the basic ADSL service started! We've been on a "waiting list" now since October... what a sad excuse for a company...
