Another good news!

Seeb airport flyover, bridge to be completed in November

MUSCAT — Over 65 per cent of the work on the Seeb International Airport flyover and bridge project has been completed, according to Carillion Alawi LLC, the company executing the project.

All the work related to the project would be completed in November and the inauguration would take place during the 37th National Day celebrations, the manager of Carillion Alawi said.

The project is one of the vital plans executed by Muscat Municipality for smooth traffic on the main road.

The manager said over 600 employees, including engineers, technical workers and drivers, were working round the clock to complete the project on schedule.

He said the company had faced several challenges over the execution of the project such as shortage of key raw materials. The company had put in tremendous efforts to ensure completion of the project as planned, he added.

The bridge and the intersections of the project were designed according to international specifications and criteria in the field, he said.

The project included construction of three lanes along the Sultan Qaboos Street, a flyover, sub-roads, landscaping and lighting among other works.

I heard they want to open it with the celebrations of the Omani National Day in November, inshallah, but will they really be able to finish the project within the coming 3 months?

thats a good question...I haven't yet seem how far they've gone with it...I'll only get to see it in December when I fly across 12,000 kilometers to come to muscat for the vacations...

I've seen it, too. And I hardly think it will be ready by the National Day. unless they use LEGO parts. :P

I remember a similar news spread about the Al-Khoud interchange when it was under construction...

Wait and see. The contractor will get the work done no matter what it takes. Reason? 1) They are part of one of the biggest construction companies in the world and they don't want to taint their reputation. 2) They weren't the lowest bidder in the tender but the ministry gave them the project on condition that they get it done in November 2007. Now with Gonu, hear they gave them an extra month, but the work has to be done in December. Most importantly, 3) The company has its eyes on the bigger project: building the new airport, which is probably going to be the biggest construction project in the history of Oman. There's no way Carillion will hurt their chances of losing out on that project by delaying the smaller one.

It can be done in time. The hard work is mostly done. One section of the flyover is over. Embankments on both sides have been done. All what's left from the hard part is the second expanse of the flyover. They have 4 months to do that.

muscati: What about taking off the roundabout?

muscati said...

It's always faster to take things down than to build them. It would only take a couple of days to demolish the ugly clock tower on the roundabout. Because of traffic diversions it will more of course to tear down the roundabout and build the road through it. But don't forget there's still two weeks left in August, and then all of September, October and November to get this work done.

Good point Muscati...

I think the work has started to some extent for new airport?...my sister has a classmate who's dad is in NESPAK, one of the companies involved in the airport...

(do correct me if i'm wrong though...)

The tender for the new airport is not out yet. The detailed design is still not finished. The only work being done is on the earth moving and leveling on the project site. There is also a second contract for the upgradation of the present airport to add air bridges to the planes which should be done by January or February (I think)
